ASSOCIATE MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST
Supervised by Dr. Theresa DuBois, PsyD, LMFT # 45316
Does joy have a scent? It does if you’re Kate Hendrix, and that scent comes from hay and horses. Climbing on bales of hay, sitting on the fence line and caring for her family’s seven horses while growing up are engrained childhood memories that come rushing back each time her boots hit the ground at Rise Canyon Ranch.
As life’s path steered her away from horses, she thought she would never return to the environment she so dearly loved. She was wrong, and connecting with the staff and horses at Rise Canyon Ranch couldn’t feel more right. Considering herself deeply compassionate and empathetic toward animals, children, elderly and individuals with disabilities, this new stage of building her skills and experience in equine-assisted psychotherapy holds great promise for a rewarding career.
Hailing from a family rooted in military service and law enforcement, Kate served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Police Dispatcher. While immersed in these distinct cultures, Kate developed a deep understanding that military members, emergency responders and their families encounter unique life experiences that are continuously impacted by an immense variety of challenges, stressors, and traumas. This opened her eyes and served as the motivation for her goal to one day work in an equine-assisted therapeutic capacity with emergency responders and veterans in the throes of trauma and recovery.
Spending a year working at a trauma recovery center as a trauma-focused therapist inspired a love for this specialty area of work. Kate is passionate about assisting survivors of all types of trauma and has a clear awareness for the unique and lasting impact trauma inflicts. She is just as clear about her goal of helping clients feel safe and heard through their experience with the horses of Rise Canyon Ranch.
With an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Counseling, focusing on marriage and family therapy, she currently serves as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and an Eagala Certified Mental Health Professional at Rise Canyon Ranch.
She welcomes the ongoing learning that lies ahead and the opportunities to facilitate self-discovery for everyone who visits Rise Canyon Ranch. Kate brings excitement, enthusiasm and a sense of purpose to her work while embracing the give-and-take of being part of a team that creates positive impact in the community.
Revisiting and healing the lost connection she had with horses deepens her appreciation for the horse-to-human connection that brings peace to so many lives. Finding, connecting with and now being a part of Rise Canyon Ranch has been a full circle moment. The cloud of disbelief that Kate really does get to hang out with horses again has officially lifted, and the smell of joy fills the air. She is exactly where she needs to be.
